Robert Boey was born in Singapore and grew up in Hong Kong. He is the owner of American Bare Conductor in Sycamore, as well as the Sycamore Industrial Park. Previously, he had been with the Anaconda Company from 1962 to 1985.
Robert has said, I view education as the single most important tool for our younger generation. He backs this thought with his actions, as he has been a member of NIUs Board of Trustees since 1996, and a board member of the NIU Foundation since 1992. He was appointed chair of the Board of Trustees in 1997 and served two terms in that position. Under his leadership, the Board of Trustees completed several significant projects, including the creation of an innovative tuition plan that encourages students to graduate more quickly; the addition of more than 200 acres to the west campus; securing $20 million for the restoration of historic Altgeld Hall; and the launching of the Convocation Center and NIU Naperville projects. Robert also chaired the presidential search committee which ultimately named John Peters as the 11th president of NIU.
The Boeys have been married for more than four decades. They have two children, son Christopher and daughter Valerie, and several grandchildren. Christopher received his M.B.A. from NIU in 1987.
