Richard O. Ryan
Richard O. Ryan Sculpture Garden

Raised on a grain and livestock farm in west central Illinois, Richard Ryan received a B.A. degree from Quincy College in 1964, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1966, and an M.A. from Stanford University in 1979. He served in the U.S. Army as a finance officer in Vietnam and held financial management positions with Armour and Company and the Chicago Board of Trade prior to joining DeKalb Genetics Corporation in 1979.

Richard started his duties at DeKalb Genetics in the Corporate Development Department in 1979 and later held various other management positions including group vice president, chief financial officer, and was named president and chief operating officer in 1990. He assumed his current position in 1999 upon the merger of DeKalb Genetics with Monsanto and subsequently retired from Monsanto in December 2001.

Though not an alumnus of Northern, Richard “Rich” Ryan has become a close friend and fervent supporter of the university. His philanthropy has made a difference in many programs, and his forthcoming generosity has created opportunities for NIU students all over campus.

Over a span of almost two decades, Rich has magnanimously supported many functions and programs at NIU. His support spans three basic areas in the university; student support, Northern Public Radio, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Most recently, his generous contribution gave much needed help to the highly acclaimed Jazz Ensemble.

Rich continues to be an important part of the NIU community through his membership in the NIU Foundation Board of Directors.
